The usual disclaimers: I own nothing. Stephen Sommers created
the characters. Etc, Etc.
DREAMS
Evelyn stirred in her sleep.
She dreamed she was walking through an ancient city. She couldn't
bring the scene into focus, but she felt as if the place was familiar.
There was something she needed
to do, something she had to take care of before…
She woke suddenly and bolted upright.
Rick, who'd been up ever since his wife had started to toss and turn wrapped
his arms around her. "Shh, your ok, Evy. Everything's ok."
She snuggled back into his body.
"We have to go to Egypt," she said.
"What?" he asked sleepily.
"I can't explain exactly why,
but I have to go to Thebes. I need to…to do something. I'm
not sure what."
"Evy, you're not making any sense."
"I know." She explained
what she could remember of the dream to him. "Rick, we have to go."
"Fine, Evy," he replied exasperated.
"But right now it's three o'clock in the morning. We can't leave
until we make some sort of arrangements."
"Thanks, hon," she relaxed now
that he'd agreed to her to out-of-the-blue request. She knew he was
just humoring her, but she'd convince him in the morning that she was serious.
She tensed again as a shiver went up her spine. "I need to check
on Alex."
"I'll do it, you stay."
He climbed out of bed and turned back to tuck the blankets in around her.
"You're freezing. You stay and warm up and I'll be right back."
Rick ambled drowsily down the
hall to their son's bedroom. He rearranged the covers over the sleeping
boy, much as he had just done for his wife. Before returning to his
own room, Rick took a moment to study his child's sleeping face.
***
The dream returned the next night
and the one after that. Despite her sense of urgency, putting together
the supplies needed for an expedition, even a small three-person expedition,
took time to arrange.
It was over a month later that
Evelyn found herself standing in yet another ruin. As she worked
to uncover what appeared to be a picture of two women with some sort of
swords, she wondered absently where her husband had gone. A snake
began to edge its way closer to her. "Go away!" she said as she used
her boot to fling the snake across the room.
Rick swerved as the snake
sailed past his face. "Those things are poisonous you know."
"Only if they bite you," Evy replied
and turned back the wall.
